  • Patterns classified by their function.

  • Accurate transcriptions using the DJEMBESOLO font system.

  • Downloadable PDFs.

EMBELLISHMENTS

Next to the the "sound-phrasing-dynamic" combo, embellishments is what makes anything shine. You should not embellish all the time but you got to know how to do it to be able to do it on purpose. Several techniques are used and sometimes combined:

  • Rebound Heel-toe (Palm-Fingertips).

  • Adding one or two notes - Used with groups of continuous notes, keeping the same starts and endings.

  • Replacing sounds - using muffled tones or sound effects such as Fingerslap, Palmtipslap - see Shapes & Sounds course.

REST PATTERNS

If you are not already a DJEMBESOLO student you probably don't know what "REST" pattern means. Check the video below, you will understand what this is about. More in depth explanations are given at the beginning of this chapter.

HERO STATEMENTS

HERO statements are patterns generally played at the beginning of a solo. Here the soloist introduces him/herself as a skilled and informed player.

NOTATION

There is a lot of discussion about the use of notation with djembe music. Let's make it simple: As far as you don't misunderstand the purpose of notation by expecting that it should be a piece of art by itself, it will not take anything from you. It will help you to improve your feeling like in the video below where two very similar divisions of time are played within the same pattern!

If you are new to notation, the animated cursor running at the bottom of the video, will considerably help the reading process.
